Using wood waste for energy – only if it’s suitable for your heating system
A suitable solution for waste wood is not judged solely on the basis of its purchase price. The key factor is how well it simplifies day-to-day operations and integrates with existing extraction, storage, conveyor systems and recovery processes.
Shredded wood waste or wood briquettes may be suitable as fuel for appropriate and approved heating systems. Whether the material may actually be used and is technically suitable depends, amongst other things, on the type of wood, moisture content, absence of foreign matter, particle size or briquette quality, as well as the fuel specifications of the boiler or plant manufacturer. Coated, treated or contaminated wood residues must be assessed separately.
Depending on their shape and intended use, wood waste from woodworking can either be shredded (e.g. boards or solid wood), directly briquetted (e.g. wood dust) or processed in a combined plant. Chunk-shaped waste usually requires a shredder. Loose, homogeneous and sufficiently dry wood shavings may be suitable for a briquette press.
